According to police sources, a 14-year-old school student was seriously injured in the firing by the police in the NaTenimbala area of Tihagoda this evening (28).
The student, who was seriously injured due to a gunshot wound to the head, was admitted to Matara General Hospital and was transferred to Galle Karapitiya General Hospital for further treatment.
A senior police officer said that two plainclothes policemen, who had gone to the area for a raid when a three-wheeler was driven in defiance of police orders, opened fire.
But the relatives of the injured student deny the allegation.
However, after that incident, there was some hot situation in the area.
A senior police officer in Matara said that an impartial investigation has been ordered in this regard.
A police inspector has been detained in connection with the incident and steps have been taken to suspend him.
Further investigations will be conducted on the instructions of Matara Acting Superintendent of Police, Mr. IG Chandrasena.
