Three individuals, including a police constable, have been arrested for operating an illegal drug distribution network from a residence in Bellanwila, Boralesgamuwa. The value of the seized drugs is estimated at nearly Rs. 20 million.
The main suspect is a constable attached to the Traffic Division of the Kohuwala Police, who was temporarily residing in the Jaya Mawatha area of Bellanwila. He was arrested alongside his wife and a 49-year-old individual identified as the supplier of the drugs.
The arrest was made following intelligence provided by the Sri Lanka Army’s Intelligence Unit to the Mannar Divisional Criminal Investigation Division. Acting on this information, officers raided the residence and uncovered a significant stockpile of pharmaceutical drugs.
During the raid, authorities seized 21 boxes of 150 mg tablets and one box of 300 mg tablets, amounting to a total of 1,330,420 pills stored in the house.
Investigations have revealed that the constable, who has served with the Kohuwala Police for 14 years, had been storing and distributing the drugs islandwide. The drugs are believed to have been supplied by the pharmacy owner, the third suspect in custody and the alleged mastermind of the operation.
All three individuals have been taken into custody on charges including possession of controlled substances, drug trafficking, and aiding and abetting the distribution of illegal drugs.
According to police, both the constable and his wife are 35 years old, while the alleged supplier is 49. Further investigations are ongoing.
