PayPal is set to officially launch its services in Sri Lanka from May 15, according to a report by Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, although neither the company nor local authorities have made a formal announcement yet.
Sources familiar with the matter told NewsWire that PayPal officials visited Sri Lanka last month to hold discussions with local stakeholders regarding the rollout of services.
The reported development has attracted significant attention from freelancers, digital entrepreneurs, and online businesses in Sri Lanka, many of whom have long been advocating for full PayPal access in the country.
Although Sri Lankans have been able to make payments through PayPal for several years, the ability to receive international payments directly into local accounts has remained restricted.
SLRC further reported that the service is expected to commence on May 15. However, officials have not yet publicly confirmed the timeline or provided details regarding the scope of operations.
So far, no official statement has been issued by PayPal, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, or the Sri Lankan Government regarding the reported launch.
