Professor Jayantha Jayawardana, formerly a member of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), has been reinstated to his position as an SLMC member. His removal by former Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella was deemed unjustified. The reinstatement has been authorized by the current Minister of Health, Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, with a tenure of five years, subject to voluntary resignation or removal according to the ordinance.

Expressing appreciation for his reinstatement, Professor Jayawardana emphasized the arbitrary nature of his previous dismissal. He commenced his duties on February 14, 2024. Last October, he was abruptly removed from his role as SLMC Vice President without adequate explanation. The former Minister of Health’s decision was widely criticized for lacking justification and breaching principles of natural justice.

Professor Jayawardana’s professional background underscores his significant expertise and leadership in Obstetrics and Gynecology, along with his academic and administrative contributions to Sri Lanka’s medical education and healthcare system.
