Opposition Leader Urges Government to Declare State of Disaster Amid Severe Cyclone
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

It is regrettable that the government has yet to declare a state of disaster despite the massive destruction caused, even as the Meteorological Department reports that a deep depression in the southeast has intensified into a cyclone. Section 11 of the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Act No. 13 of 2005 allows for immediate relief to families affected by such calamities once a state of disaster is declared. The government is therefore urged to act promptly and declare a state of disaster by consulting the relevant authorities, according to Sri Lanka Latest News.

The Opposition Leader stated in Parliament today that, despite having informed the President about this matter, no action has been taken. He further highlighted that the government appears unaware of the legal provisions related to disaster management.

Expressing his condolences to those who have suffered loss of life, homes, and property due to the severe weather, the Opposition Leader also extended gratitude to government officials and security forces assisting affected communities. He urged the government to provide necessary relief to those impacted by this disaster and to offer them some measure of solace amid the ongoing distress.
