Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa emphasized that the time has come for the people to actively protect and promote the Buddhist order, counter the various attacks and challenges faced by the Maha Sangha, and safeguard the respected and venerable clergy from these threats.
He made these remarks while addressing the media after participating in a series of offerings held today at Sri Jayewardenerama Maha Viharaya in Kotte, commemorating the merits of ancient authors.
The opposition leader criticized certain individuals for insulting the Maha Sangha, calling them “savages,” and suggesting that other members of the clergy should be beaten. He described such statements, including claims that blows in karate demonstrations were directed at other priestly groups, as immoral and vulgar, and stressed that legal action should be taken against those responsible.
Government Statements Undermine the Constitution
Sajith Premadasa further stated that attacks on the Maha Sangha are an affront to the Constitution, which protects the Buddha Sasana as the supreme law of the country. He said that the role of government ministers should be to promote Buddhism, safeguard other religions and cultures, and foster unity rather than division. “The wrong statements made by government ministers only promote hatred, anger, and disunity. Responsible ministers should speak to unite the country, not to divide it,” he added.
Sri Lanka Is Not a Secular Country
The opposition leader reiterated that Sri Lanka is not a secular country. However, given the diversity of religious communities, he stressed the importance of harnessing the virtues of all religions to create a virtuous society. He called for unity and a program that preserves the priority of the Buddha Sasana while protecting other religious communities.
Government Brings Substandard Coal
On economic issues, Premadasa criticized the government for attempting to increase electricity bills while simultaneously importing substandard coal, causing significant losses to the country. He said all eight coal shipments brought by the government were of substandard quality, a fact clearly evident when examining the data and combustion records, labeling the transaction as corrupt.
Closure of Ranasinghe Premadasa’s Factories Threatens 30,000 Jobs
Premadasa also highlighted the closure of garment factories established by Mr. Ranasinghe Premadasa, which had generated millions of dollars and created thousands of jobs. He warned that many factories affiliated with MAS are scheduled to close, putting 30,000 jobs at risk. He urged the government to intervene and provide state support to prevent these closures.
“Instead of opening factories, this government is closing them, resulting in a serious loss of employment. Immediate government intervention is needed,” concluded the opposition leader.
