Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa emphasized that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) played a pivotal role in the judicial process when local government elections were repeatedly postponed. The party took legal action, demanding that elections be held, and fully supported the cancellation of outdated nominations and the introduction of a new nomination process to address the prevailing challenges.
Addressing the media after meeting with members of the Election Commission today, Premadasa highlighted the significant role played by the 66 opposition MPs and various parties in the budget process. He noted that the second debate is currently underway, with a vote scheduled for the 25th. Following this, committee and subcommittee sessions will take place, during which all MPs are committed to fulfilling their legislative responsibilities. Given the complexity of this period, he stated that the opposition has formally requested the Election Commission to allow MPs to complete their parliamentary duties and commence the election process after March 21.
Premadasa also addressed concerns raised by various groups calling for further election postponements. He stressed that the parliamentary process is intricate and that those unfamiliar with its workings should educate themselves before making demands. He urged that elections be conducted after the completion of the budget proceedings.
Furthermore, Premadasa accused the government of attempting to manipulate the Election Commission, stating that government leaders are treating it as a puppet. He asserted that the government has no authority to determine election dates or nomination schedules and criticized its interference in the electoral process.
