The Opposition Leader stated that it is a fundamental duty of a government to ensure the right to life of its citizens and that affirming the rule of law in the country is a primary responsibility of the government. However, he emphasized that the current government has failed to prevent the widespread shootings, murders, and threats occurring throughout the country.
He further said that both he and other Members of Parliament have raised these concerns in Parliament previously, but since no adequate solutions have been provided so far, he is once again reminding the government of its responsibility. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa made these remarks today in Parliament.
He made these statements under Standing Order 27(2) while questioning the government regarding the ongoing situation.
The Opposition Leader noted that the steps taken by the government so far to address the shootings and threats across the country are insufficient. He revealed that in the past eight months alone, 79 shootings and 52 murders have been reported. Given the seriousness of the situation, he called on the government to present a concrete action plan to address it.
This Is a National Security Issue
He stated that the rising violence across the country is a national security concern. Although some government ministers claim there is no connection between these killings and national security, the safety of the country and its people is directly tied to national security. He stressed that such incidents also negatively affect the country’s appeal to foreign tourists and investors, and therefore, the government must pay immediate attention to the issue.
He also pointed out that the public is now directly exposed to the effects of widespread drug trafficking and that ordinary people are becoming victims of conflicts between drug traffickers. He said the government’s current programs to tackle this problem have failed and, if there is an alternative plan, it should be presented to the public.
Now Even Officials and Public Representatives Are Facing Threats
Furthermore, he revealed that even Members of Parliament are facing death threats. He noted that senior government officials, such as the head of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority, have resigned due to such threats, and even local government members are being directly and indirectly threatened. He mentioned that recently, Mr. Thusitha Haloluwa was also attacked.
The Opposition Leader stated that the public has a right to know the progress of the actions the government has taken regarding these incidents.
He concluded by saying that not only civilians but also opposition MPs involved in public service are facing serious threats. He urged that the Speaker of Parliament should also pay attention to this issue, as they are responsible for ensuring the safety of these individuals. Therefore, both the Minister of Public Security and the Speaker must inform Parliament of the steps they are taking.
