No Government Response to Sajith Premadasa’s Questions on 2025 Budget Implementation

A notable incident occurred in Parliament when Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa questioned the government on which proposals from the 2025 Budget had been implemented so far — and received no response from any government minister.

The Opposition Leader raised the question last Friday (24) under Standing Orders 27/2. During his address, Mr. Premadasa inquired about the total number of budget proposals presented by the government for the year 2025 and sought clarification on which of those proposals had been carried out.

He further questioned the government regarding the proposals that remain unimplemented and requested explanations for the failure to initiate them.

In addition, Mr. Premadasa raised several economic concerns, including the country’s current account deficit and trade deficit — asking for their respective percentages of the GDP. He also sought details on the progress of projects implemented under foreign aid and the amount of foreign direct investment received in 2025.

Responding on behalf of the government, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the government would provide the relevant answers at the next parliamentary session.

Meanwhile, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is scheduled to present the Budget for the year 2026 to Parliament during the upcoming session.
