The Meteorological Department reports that the low-pressure area located in the southeast Bay of Bengal, northeast of Sri Lanka, has further intensified and is moving westwards and northwestwards, resulting in widespread rainfall across the island.
According to the department, this weather system is expected to develop into a depression tomorrow (25) and may further strengthen into a cyclone by Monday, October 27.
As a result, the prevailing rainy conditions are anticipated to continue until October 28.
The Disaster Management Center (DMC) stated that more than 20,000 people in 16 districts have been affected by the ongoing adverse weather conditions. Rain continues to fall in several parts of the country.
Due to the continuous rainfall, four spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir have been opened, releasing 2,256 cubic feet of water per second into the Kala Oya.
Irrigation engineers further noted that by keeping two spill gates of the Kala Wewa open by one foot each, an additional 1,241 cubic feet of water per second is being released into the Kala Oya.
Consequently, the Aukana–Kekirawa road, particularly near the Aukana Temple, remains submerged and is expected to stay underwater for several days due to the overflow from the Kala Oya.
A report issued by the Irrigation Department this afternoon warned residents in low-lying areas to remain alert for possible flooding, as water levels in the Kalu Ganga and Millakanda areas are likely to rise further.
