An operation was launched yesterday (03) by the Sri Lanka Navy to seize 11 boats engaged in illegal fishing activities in the Kuchchaveli sea area, Trincomalee.

During the operation, an organized group surrounded a Navy vessel and attempted to hijack one of the boats. A scuffle ensued between the group and Navy personnel as the officers attempted to enforce the law.

Amid escalating tensions, the group reportedly attempted to seize firearms from the Navy officers. In response, the Navy fired warning shots into the air to regain control of the situation.

During the altercation, a firearm discharged and struck an individual. The injured person, a 23-year-old male, was promptly admitted to the Trincomalee General Hospital and is currently receiving treatment.

The Navy has launched a further investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, local fishermen have reportedly begun staging a protest in the Kuchchaveli area in response to the events. The Minister of Fisheries has requested an official report from the Navy regarding the incident.
