It is reported that, in order to accelerate the rebuilding of the country following the greatest national disaster in Sri Lanka’s history, members of both the ruling party and the opposition are preparing to submit a special proposal calling for the establishment of a National Council for a specific period of time. It has been learned that a powerful group representing religious leaders of all faiths, scholars, university professors, civil society representatives, and the business community is preparing to forward this proposal to the government.
According to reports, this group has convened several times over the past week and held multiple rounds of discussions.
During these discussions, they have emphasized that, in order to swiftly restore the country to normalcy in the aftermath of the severe disaster, everyone must work collaboratively—regardless of political affiliation, community, ethnicity, or religion—either within Parliament or for a set period of time.
They have also expressed the view that this National Council should operate continuously for at least one year.
They further warn that if Parliament remains divided and political parties continue to act as opposing sides, recovering from the current disaster will remain an unattainable dream, and the country faces a serious risk of slipping into economic bankruptcy once again.
