Following the Supreme Court’s verdict on Friday (6) validating the decision taken by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) to expel MP Naseer Ahmed, the party has written to the Election Commission (EC) to issue a gazette notice to appoint a new MP in his place. Sri Lanka Latest News

The General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, President’s Advocate Mr. Nizam Kariyappar told the Sunday Times newspaper yesterday that the party has informed the Election Commission Chairman and members, the Election Commissioner General and the Secretary General of the Parliament in writing regarding the court decision on the decision to expel Mr. Ahmed.

As per Article 99 (13) (a) of the Constitution, when the Supreme Court decides that the impeachment is valid, the MP’s office will be void from that date.

As Mr. Ahmed is an elected Member of Parliament, the Electoral Commission has the power to appoint the next most popular candidate from the Batticaloa district in the 2020 parliamentary election. Mr. Kariyappar said that former Member of Parliament Ali Zaheer Maulana.

Mr. Ahmed, who is also the Environment Minister, had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the party’s decision to expel him for voting in favor of the Appropriation Bill 2022.
