In a significant development following the recent general election victory, it has been reported that Ms. Harini Amarasuriya is set to be appointed as the Prime Minister of the new government.
The decision was reportedly made during a special discussion held last night by the National People’s Power (NPP). The swearing-in ceremony for the new cabinet is scheduled for Monday, the 18th.
The 10th Parliament’s inaugural session is slated to commence on the 21st, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expected to attend.
On the first day of Parliament, the Secretary General of Parliament will oversee proceedings, as no official seating arrangements for Members of Parliament (MPs) will be in place. MPs will have the flexibility to occupy any seat of their choice.
The session will officially begin once the ceremonial mace is placed in the House chamber. The agenda includes the election of the new Speaker, who will take the oath of office first, followed by the swearing-in of MPs. Subsequently, the Deputy Speaker and Deputy Committee Chairpersons will be elected through a parliamentary vote.
This marks the beginning of a new chapter for the government, with key leadership positions to be finalized in the coming days.
