The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory effective for the next 36 hours, Sri Lanka Latest News.

The statement was released today (09) at 4.00 pm.

According to the advisory, several areas in the Northern and North-Central provinces, as well as the Trincomalee district, may experience moderate to heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm, the Department of Meteorology said.

The department further noted that showers or thundershowers may occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, Northwestern, and Uva provinces.

In addition, showers or thundershowers may develop in other parts of the island after around 1.00 pm, with some areas expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm.

The Meteorological Department also stated that moderate to strong winds of about 30–40 kmph are likely at times in the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, the Trincomalee district, and along the eastern slopes of the Central Hills.

Misty conditions are expected in some places within the Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Southern provinces during the morning hours.

The Department of Meteorology urged the public to take necessary precautions to minimize risks associated with temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Furthermore, the department confirmed that the northeast monsoon has now established itself over the island.
