Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Tuesday called on Sri Lankan President Anura Disanayake in Colombo, conveying Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warm wishes and India’s message of solidarity in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.

In a post on X, Dr. Jaishankar said the discussions built on India’s role as a first responder under Operation Sagar Bandhu, with New Delhi committing a USD 450 million reconstruction package to support Sri Lanka’s recovery from the cyclone’s devastation.

The assistance will focus on the rehabilitation and restoration of critical infrastructure, including roads, railways and bridges damaged by the storm. India will also support the construction of houses that were fully destroyed or partially damaged during the cyclone.

In addition, the package includes targeted assistance for the health and education sectors, particularly facilities affected by the disaster, as well as support for agriculture to address possible short- and medium-term shortages caused by the cyclone’s impact.

A key component of the assistance will also strengthen disaster response and preparedness, aimed at improving Sri Lanka’s resilience to future natural calamities.

“India stands firmly with Sri Lanka,” Dr. Jaishankar said, underscoring that the support is rooted in the two countries’ civilisational ties and guided by India’s Neighbourhood First policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.

The visit and announcement reaffirm India’s continued commitment to Sri Lanka’s recovery and long-term stability following one of the most severe natural disasters to hit the island in recent times.
