A large-scale protest took place in Jaffna today, calling for justice regarding the Chemmani mass grave and seeking international attention to the unresolved issue.
Amid a growing number of mass graves and a lack of concrete solutions, the demonstration aimed to spotlight the long-standing call for justice for the Tamil community. The peaceful protest, titled “Unfading Glow,” was launched near the Jaffna entrance, close to the Chemmani area.
Organised by the People’s Action Movement and led by Attorney Vaishnavi Shanmuganathan, the protest commenced this morning with a symbolic lighting of a flame by a relative of Krishanti, a victim killed in 1996.
The event drew wide participation from interfaith religious leaders, political dignitaries, civil society representatives, and members of the public, all of whom paid floral tributes in remembrance of the victims.
As part of the protest’s evening programme, organisers announced a storytelling session focused on the Chemmani issue, followed by a documentary screening.
Furthermore, organisers confirmed that a set of demands related to the mass grave issue will be submitted to a senior United Nations official, who is expected to visit Jaffna in the coming days.
