Malani Fonseka, Queen of Hela Cinema, Passes Away at 78

Veteran actress Malani Fonseka, celebrated as the “Queen of Hela Cinema,” passed away this morning (24) while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo. She had been battling illness for some time.

Born on April 30, 1947, in Kelaniya as Wanni Arachchige Malani Senehelatha Fonseka, she rose to prominence in the Sri Lankan film industry under the name Malani Fonseka, becoming a trailblazer in Sinhala cinema.

Her journey in the performing arts began in 1963 with stage dramas. She made her cinematic debut in 1968 with the film Punchi Baba. Over the decades, Fonseka became one of the most respected and beloved figures in the industry.

In 1973, she was honored with the Most Popular Actress Award and went on to receive numerous accolades throughout her career, including the prestigious President’s Award, Sarasavi Award, OCIC Award, and Sumathi Award, frequently earning the title of Best Actress.

Her exceptional talent was showcased in iconic films such as Nidhanaya, Bambaru Aethi, Wekande Walawwa, Aradhana, and Ammawarune, solidifying her legacy in Sri Lankan cinema.

In addition to her contributions to the arts, Malani Fonseka also served her country in the political arena. In 2010, she entered Parliament as a National List Member and held her position until 2015.

She was 78 years old at the time of her passing.
