Mahinda Rajapaksa Affirms Commitment to Peace at War Heroes Commemoration
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that he “fought for peace” during his speech at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s war hero commemoration held this morning (May 20) near the War Heroes Memorial.

The event was also attended by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Addressing the gathering, Mahinda Rajapaksa emphasized that his presence was a matter of duty.

“We came today to fulfill a duty,” he said. “Yes, we fought for peace—not to capture anyone. We fought to protect the country.”

Reflecting further, he added, “Whether this will be done in the future is uncertain. That will be decided by the governments to come. War is a tragedy. But our army won. In war, one side has to win. National security is not a question—we must protect the country.”
