The Department of Meteorology says there is a possibility of further development of the low-pressure atmospheric disturbance currently located over the Bay of Bengal, southeast of Sri Lanka.

According to the department, this system is expected to enhance rainfall conditions across the island, particularly in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces, starting from January 08.

Showers are expected to occur at times in the Eastern, Central, Uva, North-Central, and Northern provinces.

The Department of Meteorology further states that moderately heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm may occur in several areas of the Uva Province and in the Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa, and Ampara districts.

In other parts of the island, showers or thundershowers may develop at several places after 1.00 p.m.

Additionally, the department warns that strong winds of up to 50 kmph may occur at times over the eastern slopes of the Central Highlands, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, and Eastern provinces, and in the Hambantota, Gampaha, Colombo, and Monaragala districts.

The Department of Meteorology urges the public to take necessary precautions to minimize risks caused by temporary strong winds and lightning associated with thunderstorms.
