Galle Superintendent of prisons intervene in the construction of buildings by donating a piece of land of 44 perches to the Cancer Society for the construction of buildings for the relatives of patients who come from far away to stay at the Cancer Ward of Karapitiya Hospital and to be maintained as an intermediate home for cancer patients is currently being misused without putting it to any use. Mr. Pulina Karunaratne requested for the second time at the Kadawat Satara regional coordination committee meeting held yesterday. Sri Lanka Latest News
The meeting was chaired by the former State Administration Home Affairs Minister, Galle District Member of Parliament, Vajira Abeywardane. Mr. Pulina Karunaratne, who further explained the facts, also said:
“My mother was taken to the cancer ward of Karapitiya Hospital to be treated for cancer. There I saw how the relatives of the patients coming from faraway places had no place to stay. Similarly, there were a group of cancer patients who had recovered but had no one to take care of them. As a solution to this, I bought the land of forty-four perches nearby and donated the land to the Cancer Society to build buildings for the relatives of the patients to stay and to run it as an intermediate home for cancer patients.
The donation was made in January 2014. Land was taken and donated for 75 lakhs. Today the value of that land is three crore rupees. Shortly after donating the land, I visited the land. At that time, the land was being operated as a car park. When I went and stopped the vehicle, I was given a ticket of fifty rupees. I was very sad. I wrote to the Cancer Society protesting against the misuse of the land donated to the Cancer Ward for the use of the Cancer Hospital.
I donated the land not to earn money by running a car park. Therefore, I request you to intervene to build the necessary buildings for the benefit of cancer patients on this land.”
Here, Vajira Abeywardena instructed Kadawat Satara Divisional Secretary Indika Samarakoon to bring everyone together to discuss the matter and take necessary measures. Later, Mr. Abeyawardena took the journalists and showed them the land. When asked about this, Talangalle Wijitha Thero, president of Karapitiya Hospital’s Cancer Society, said the following.
“The cancer society’s money is there to provide food and medicine to the patients , and buildings cannot be built. Buildings cost crores of rupees. Even if they are built, they spend about two lakh rupees per month for maintenance activities including light bill, water bill, and employee salary payment. However, a sub-committee of the Cancer Society planned the construction of buildings here. But it stopped due to lack of resources. It would be better if this was built by a resource persons.”
