Mr. Sumedha Arunashantha, who represented Samagi Janabalawegaya, won with 4 majority votes in the poll held today (2) to elect a suitable candidate for the position of mayor of Kurunegala Municipality.
Mr. Vijayananda Wedisinghe, the opposition leader of the Kurunegala Municipal Council, who represented the opposition together with Mr. Sumedha Arunashantha, represented the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna for the election held to elect a new mayor.
Pohottuwa and the United National Party came forward to support him.
But despite the support of both the parties, he got only 6 votes. Mr. Sumedha Arunashantha got 10 votes.
Mr. Sumedha Arunashanta is the 17th mayor elected to the Kurunegala Municipal Council.
Mr. Sumedha Arunashantha had been nominated for election on the advice of Kurunegala SJB MP Ashoka Abeysinghe.
