In a statement released by State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe in a statement released to the media says 18 million euros from the European Union will be used to improve the social security system of Sri Lanka.

‘A comprehensive discussion was held yesterday (01) with a delegation of the European Union (Sri Lanka and Maldives region) with the aim of identifying areas to upgrade the social security system in Sri Lanka. The State Minister pointed out the need to further streamline the selection of the people who is in much need of such welfare benefits by maintaining transparency in providing welfare benefits including Samurdhi. Mrs. Jenny Correa Nunes, Head of EU Cooperation, stated that the European Union will work to provide the necessary technical assistance for that process, and accordingly, identify the current needs of the social security system and provide support to the parties who deserve relief.’
