President’s Counsel Kaushalya Nawaratne has stepped down from his role as President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) effective immediately.
The Bar Council of the BASL, in a unanimous decision made on August 31, called for Nawaratne’s resignation. The proposal for his resignation was formally approved during a council meeting.
The call for resignation follows an ongoing investigation into allegations related to a BASL project funded by JICA, aimed at promoting transparency and combating corruption in Sri Lanka. On May 18, the BASL Bar Council had established a five-member Committee of Inquiry to review these concerns.
Nawaratne had been re-elected as BASL President in January for the 2024-2025 term, following an uncontested election.
