A special resolution was unanimously passed today (18) at the Kandy Municipal Council to remove unauthorized street vendors from the city.
The second session of the Council convened under the patronage of Kandy Mayor Chandrasiri Wijenayake. During the session, Rohitha Lal Dharmasiri, a member representing the Sarva Jana Balaya Party, presented a resolution calling for the removal of street vendors who have reportedly been obstructing and harassing pedestrians in the city for some time.
The resolution received unanimous support, with both ruling party and opposition members raising their hands in approval.
Following the session, Mayor Chandrasiri Wijenayake announced that the removal of these street vendors will take place during the upcoming Esala Perahera season. He emphasized that once removed, these vendors will not be permitted to return or conduct business along the city’s pavements after the festival concludes.
The Mayor further noted that the vendors will be officially informed of the decision via public announcements using loudspeakers in the coming days.
