Justice Murdu Fernando, a prominent member of Sri Lanka’s judiciary, will take oaths as the country’s new Chief Justice before President Anura Dissanayake tomorrow (2).
Her appointment follows the recent approval of her name by the Constitutional Council to succeed Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, who retired after a distinguished tenure.
Justice Fernando has served on the Supreme Court bench since March 9, 2018. Before her appointment to the apex court, she held the position of Senior Additional Solicitor General at the Attorney General’s Department, where she contributed over 30 years of service.
As the most senior sitting justice of the Supreme Court, her elevation to the role of Chief Justice underscores her extensive experience and respected standing within the legal community.
An alumna of Princess of Wales College, Moratuwa, Justice Fernando earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from the Faculty of Law at the University of Colombo. Her career began at the Attorney General’s Department, where she joined as a State Counsel and rose through the ranks, leaving an indelible mark on Sri Lanka’s legal landscape.
