The French Embassy in Sri Lanka and the Maldives is inviting you to dive into a thrilling underwater world aboard a French nuclear submarine, for a unique cinematic experience. As part of the French Cultural Season 2025, the French Embassy in Sri Lanka is delighted to organise the screening of one of the greatest successes of French cinema in recent years. Cinema lovers, thriller enthusiasts, fans of underwater imagery, and the simply curious are all welcome to discover Le Chant du Loup (The Wolf’s Call) by Antonin Baudry, on the big screen in Colombo, Matara and Kandy.
This year, the ocean is at the heart of global attention. Last June, France hosted in Nice the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), co-organized with Costa Rica. UNOC3 brought together global leaders, scientists, and civil society to accelerate the protection of the oceans, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14), which aims to conserve and sustainably use marine resources. In the wake of this global momentum, Sri Lanka ratified the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ Agreement) on September 16, 2025, a landmark agreement establishing rules for conserving marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction and sharing marine genetic resources equitably. As two Indian Ocean nations, France and Sri Lanka proudly cooperate through initiatives like the Regional Center for Maritime Studies (RCMS), opened in Colombo last December, to enhance maritime safety and security. The ocean nourishes, protects, connects, and inspires us all. Through science, culture and arts, including cinema, we can raise awareness, spark emotions, and inspire action for a sustainable future.
It is with this spirit that the French Embassy has chosen to present Le Chant du Loup to Sri Lankan audiences. This gripping underwater thriller immerses viewers inside a French nuclear submarine during a high-stakes mission off the Syrian coast. The crew’s fate rests on the ears of Aubin, a young acoustic warfare specialist, as he struggles to decode a threatening sound. Blending hyperrealism, spectacular tension, and poetic mystery, Le Chant du Loup offers an intense and immersive cinematic journey deep beneath the ocean’s surface. The film was a major box office and critical success in France, drawing more than 1.5 million spectators to theatres and winning a César Award in 2020.
