The Cabinet has approved the submission of the Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill to Parliament for approval, Sri Lanka Latest News reports.
The Cabinet meeting held on 16-06-2025 granted in-principle approval to repeal the Parliamentary Pensions Act No. 1 of 1971 of the National Council of State.
According to the government’s policy statement, which includes the promise made to all Sri Lankans who endorsed the vision of “A Rich Country – A Beautiful Life,” the Legal Draftsman has prepared a Bill aimed at repealing the Parliamentary Pensions Act. The intention of this move is to abolish pension entitlements provided to elected Members of Parliament and their spouses.
The Attorney General has granted clearance for the Bill.
Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Justice and National Integration to publish the draft Bill in the Government Gazette and subsequently present it to Parliament for approval.
