Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to visit Sri Lanka next week for discussions with the newly elected administration led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The official one-day visit is scheduled for Friday, October 4.
This visit marks a significant moment, as it is unusual for the newly elected Sri Lankan President not to visit New Delhi first, a tradition upheld by previous leaders after their elections.
Dr. Jaishankar previously met with Mr. Dissanayake in New Delhi before the elections. During the campaign leading up to the Indian elections in June, Dr. Jaishankar also expressed concerns about the legacy of the former Indian Congress government under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, specifically regarding the ceding of Katchchativu to Sri Lankan sovereignty.
Several ongoing Indian projects are expected to be key topics of discussion during Dr. Jaishankar’s visit to Sri Lanka.
