In its inaugural meeting, the new Cabinet of Ministers is set to discuss a proposal aimed at reducing the benefits afforded to parliamentarians.
A three-member committee will be established to assess and recommend changes to various MPs’ perks, including pensions, allowances, and duty-free vehicle concessions.
A senior official from the President’s Office indicated that the proposal includes replacing duty-free vehicle permits with state-issued vehicles for MPs. Under this plan, parliamentarians would be required to return the vehicles at the end of their terms.
The official also noted that vehicles recently returned by former ministers and officials will be redistributed to members of the incoming parliament.
While some recommendations from the committee will be implemented through circulars, others will necessitate parliamentary approval, according to the official. Furthermore, the President’s Office has stated that it will not maintain a large fleet of vehicles.
