ITJP submits criminal complaint against Gotabaya Rajapaksa in Singapore
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Lawyers from the International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) have asked Singapore’s Attorney General to immediately arrest former Sri Lankan President Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa for war crimes.

According to the 63-page complaint, Rajapaksa violated the Geneva Conventions in serious ways while serving as Secretary of Defense during the civil war in 2009, and that these crimes can be prosecuted in Singapore because Singapore has “universal jurisdiction.”

During Sri Lanka’s civil war, Gotabaya Rajapaksa allegedly committed grave violations of the Geneva Conventions, as well as violations of international humanitarian and criminal law. Murder, execution, torture, and inhuman treatment are among them, as are rape and other forms of sexual violence, deprivation of liberty, severe bodily and mental harm, and starvation.
