Sony International has issued a formal letter to Swarnavahini, accusing the channel of using its intellectual property without authorization. The complaint follows Swarnavahini’s official announcement yesterday (18) regarding the launch of a new program titled “Jeevithayata Kotiyak.”
According to the letter, Sony International alleges that the concept of the new Swarnavahini program imitates the format of “Sirasa Lakshapathi,” which was previously broadcast on Sirasa TV. Sirasa Lakshapathi is the officially licensed Sri Lankan version of the globally renowned “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” franchise, owned by Sony Corporation of India.
The letter further highlights that Chandana Suriya Bandara, the former presenter of Sirasa Lakshapathi, and Susara Dinal, the former CEO of Sirasa and producer of the Lakshapathi program, are now employed at Swarnavahini. It is reported that the three individuals have collectively expressed strong opposition to what they describe as an attempt to replicate a franchise owned by Sony.
Sony International states that launching such a program without its knowledge or approval constitutes a violation of its intellectual property rights. As a result, the company has requested the immediate suspension of the newly introduced program.
