The police report that the thieves broke the windows of the accountants (Sarap) section of the office, entered the section, opened the safe and took the money there.
It is reported that the safe was opened using its key and police investigations are underway as to how it happened.
The amount of money taken away is yet to be calculated and it is speculated to be 12 or 15 lakh rupees, said the office officials.
Ambalantota Police is conducting further investigations regarding the incident.
