I will keep fighting for my father: Ahimsa Wickrematunge

Ahimsa Wickrematunge, the dead journalist’s daughter, said she will continue to fight for her father.

She stated that a People’s Tribunal decision has increased her resolve and campaigning.

A series of civil society-led hearings concluded this week in The Hague, with justice sought for the murders of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge and journalists in Mexico and Syria.

“Hearing the People’s Tribunal judges announce a guilty judgement on my father’s assassination was something my family and I had been waiting for the Sri Lankan government to achieve for 13 years.” For years, the Sri Lankan government has barred families like mine from pursuing justice for their loved ones,” Ahimsa Wickrematunge told the Daily Mirror.

She stated that impunity for crimes against journalists is increasing around the world, and that thanks to the People’s Tribunal, dead journalists like her father now have a chance to be heard in court.
