The 2024 Parliamentary Election concluded yesterday (15), marking a historic shift in Sri Lanka’s political landscape. The National People’s Power (NPP) emerged as the dominant force, securing a majority of seats in Parliament.
This election saw a significant transformation, as many long-serving Members of Parliament and ministers from traditionally powerful political parties lost their seats. According to the final results, the NPP achieved an unprecedented victory, winning more than two-thirds of the seats in Parliament.
This outcome is historic, as it is the first time a single party, unaffiliated with any alliance, has secured over 150 seats under Sri Lanka’s proportional representation system.
In another notable development, this year’s election saw the election of over twenty women to Parliament—a substantial milestone in representation. A majority of these women were elected under the banner of the National People’s Power, further solidifying the party’s influence.
The women representatives elected to Parliament are as follows:
- Dr. Harini Amarasuriya – National People’s Power
- Ambiga Samuel – National People’s Power
- Nilanthi Kotta Hachchige – National People’s Power
- Oshani Umanga – National People’s Power
- Saroja Paulraj – National People’s Power
- Nilusha Gamage – National People’s Power
- Sagarika Athauda – National People’s Power
- Hiruni Wijesinghe – National People’s Power
- Chathuri Gangani – National People’s Power
- Thushari Jayasinghe – National People’s Power
- Hazara Liyanage – National People’s Power
- Deepthi Wasalage – National People’s Power
- Chamindrani Kiri Ella – Samagi People’s Power
- Former MP Rohini Kumari Wijeratne – Samagi People’s Power
- Samanmali Gunasinghe – National People’s Power
This election not only reshaped the political arena but also highlighted the increasing role of women in governance, setting a new benchmark for future elections in Sri Lanka.
