The Department of Meteorology states that the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the prevailing atmospheric disturbance around the island are currently influencing the weather conditions in Sri Lanka.
As a result, the Department indicates that an increase in rainfall is expected across the island today (15) and over the next few days.
Showers or thundershowers are likely to occur in many parts of the island after around 1.00 p.m. Furthermore, the Department warns that heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm may occur in certain areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, and North Western Provinces, as well as in the Ampara District.
In addition, showers may also occur in the Western, Southern, and Northern Provinces during the morning hours.
The Department further notes that foggy conditions may prevail in some locations within the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva Provinces during the morning.
The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize the risks associated with temporary strong winds and lightning that may accompany thunderstorms.
