With adverse weather conditions continuing to affect the island, the highest rainfall recorded as of this morning (28) has been reported from the Vedikulam area in the Vavuniya District, Sri Lanka Latest News reports.
According to the Meteorological Department, the rainfall measured in Vedikulam stands at 315 mm.
These figures are based on rainfall values recorded between 8:30 a.m. yesterday (27) and 4:30 a.m. today (28).
The data also indicates that the Alapilli area in the Mullaitivu District recorded 305 mm, marking the second-highest rainfall during this period.
Similarly, the third-highest rainfall was reported from Kandy in the Kandy District, with a recorded value of 223.9 mm.
The Meteorological Department stated that the prevailing heavy rains and strong winds across the island are expected to continue.
Frequent showers or thundershowers are likely in most parts of the country, while very heavy showers exceeding 200 mm may occur in certain areas of the Northern, North-Central, Central, Northwestern, Sabaragamuwa, and Western provinces. Additionally, very heavy showers exceeding 150 mm may occur in parts of the Trincomalee, Badulla, Batticaloa, Galle, and Matara districts.
The Department further noted that other areas of the island may experience moderately heavy showers exceeding 75 mm.
Meanwhile, very strong winds of 60–70 kmph, with gusts reaching 80–90 kmph, may also occur at times in many parts of the country.
