Human Rights Watch has announced that the Online Safety Act, which the government is hastily preparing to pass, will severely impact the people’s right to free expression in the elections to be held this year. Sri Lanka Latest News

Although this Act is said to be against online harassment, abuse and fraud, the government’s focus is on the Commission called the Online Safety Commission, which will be established through this Act.

This commission can decide whether something published on social media is true or false and whether it is harmful to society. Accordingly, this commission has the power to prosecute the relevant parties.

An expert committee appointed by this commission is authorized to enter the suspect’s premises and conduct inspections.
