Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Vijitha Herath announced today that the government has approved the resumption of vehicle imports, pending the establishment of a structured methodology.

Speaking at the press briefing on recent Cabinet decisions, Minister Herath noted that the Central Bank has also endorsed this decision.

He explained, “The government has decided to permit vehicle imports under a specific framework. The Central Bank has supported this plan, and we will work to create a systematic approach to ensure the process is well-regulated and minimizes the immediate outflow of funds from the country. Various stakeholders have participated in discussions, and we aim to implement this in a way that safeguards our financial stability.”

Further details on the methodology will be shared with the public in due course.
