The government has announced an increase in the special commodity tax imposed on imported potatoes and Bombay onions, effective from yesterday (26).
The Ministry of Finance stated that the revision was made through a gazette notification issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance and Economic Development.
Accordingly, the special commodity tax on one kilogram of imported potatoes has been raised from Rs. 60 to Rs. 80. Meanwhile, the tax on one kilogram of imported Bombay onions, previously Rs. 10, has been increased by Rs. 40, bringing it to Rs. 50.
The Ministry further noted that this tax revision will remain in effect for a period of three months from yesterday.
Officials emphasized that the move aims to protect local potato and onion farmers, many of whom have recently voiced concerns about not receiving a fair price for their harvest.
