The 54th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council will begin today (11) in Geneva. Sri Lanka Latest News
It is scheduled to start at Palais des Nations, the world’s largest diplomatic conference center, and continue till tomorrow.
Václav Bálek, Ambassador of the Czech Republic, is chairing this session.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, is scheduled to address the assembly at the opening of the session.
During the session, there will be 29 interactive discussions based on various topics of global importance.
Mrs. Himali Arunathilake, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka in Geneva, heads the team representing Sri Lanka.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated about politicians representing Sri Lanka said, they will not participate in the sessions this year.
After presenting his annual report on human rights, High Commissioner Volker Türk is scheduled to present the High Commissioner’s report on reconciliation, accountability and the promotion of human rights in Sri Lanka.
The United Nations Human Rights Office issued a statement last week stating that accountability for human rights in Sri Lanka is not on going.
The office said that attention should be directed to find out whether human rights have been violated in this country and whether power has been misused.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, says that a year ago, people demanded better governance and a new vision through the mass protests that took place in the country.
But he says that those people’s struggles were not enough for a historical political transformation.
The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner points out that the Sri Lankan government should make a genuine effort to make the justice process successful.
