Namal Rajapakse who further commented here,
Constitutionally, an election should be held in this country. Constitutionally, the presidential election will be held in the future. Therefore, the responsibility of any political party is to prepare for the constitutionally held election.
The Constitution empowers the Election Commission to hold the presidential election on the scheduled date. We don’t have to worry about what anyone suggests through the media. We all believe in the Constitution. Even the struggles in the past have gone against the Constitution. We appointed Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe as the current president of this country according to the constitution. We are a political force that has always protected the Constitution. We are committed to protecting the constitution in the future. According to the constitution, the executive has no power to postpone elections.
The Election Commissioner will be empowered to conduct the elections on the appointed date according to the constitution. Everyone is talking about abolishing the executive presidential system. Ever since I can remember politics, I have heard about the abolition of those executive powers.
Everyone, including our father, has made promises about this in every election. That promise has not been fulfilled yet. Executive powers are tied to the electoral system. A suitable constitution can be introduced for the country. But if you try to postpone the elections without going according to the constitution, it will be wrong.
Mr. Ranil Wickramasimhanha has been in politics for more than 45 years in this country. The biggest blessing he has is democracy. He even accused our father of violating democracy before.
