Galle Municipal Council Budget Defeated by Two-Vote Majority

The budget of the Galle Municipal Council, which is under the control of the National People’s Power (NPP), was defeated by a majority vote today (15).

The Galle Municipal Council consists of 36 members. During the vote, 17 members voted in favor of the budget, while 19 members voted against it.

The main council meeting was held this morning under the patronage of Mayor Sunil Gamage. As a result of the voting, the budget was defeated by a margin of two votes.

During the vote, all 17 members representing the National People’s Power Party voted in favor of the budget proposal. Meanwhile, 9 members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, 5 members of the United National Party, 3 members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, and 2 members of the Podujana Eksath Peramuna voted against the budget.

The Galle Municipal Council was formed through a joint establishment by the National People’s Power and the Podujana Eksath Peramuna. However, Deputy Mayor Priyantha Sahabandu, who was appointed from the Podujana Eksath Peramuna and had previously expressed support for the formation of the Municipal Council with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, also voted against the budget.
