Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath stated that it is imperative for countries to act in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law to safeguard the independence of nations.
He made this remark while responding to several questions from journalists at a special media briefing held at the Government Information Department this afternoon (04).
Addressing a question, the Minister noted that while political parties may have differing opinions, the government represents the collective stance of all parties, including opposition parties, in the country.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) had previously issued a statement regarding the attacks carried out by the United States on Venezuela and the capture of its President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
In response to questions from journalists, the Minister elaborated as follows:
Question: “Minister of Foreign Affairs, we have seen that the United States has invaded Venezuela. Previously, Sri Lanka had a policy of not intervening in Venezuela. Could you briefly explain the government’s position on this matter?”
Minister’s Response:
“It is imperative to act in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law to protect the independence of a country. All member states of the United Nations are bound to uphold this. Accordingly, a meeting of the United Nations Security Council has been convened tomorrow, and from our side, we have proposed that it be expedited. Action should also be taken in the United Nations General Assembly regarding measures that contravene these fundamental charters and principles. That is our position.”
Question: “Minister, the political committee of the JVP issued a statement on this issue. Does the government condemn it?”
Minister’s Response:
“Political parties have different positions. We are explaining the government’s position.”
Question: “So the position of the JVP is also the government’s position?”
Minister’s Response:
“No. Political parties have different views. It is different.”
Question: “I asked because of the JVP.”
Minister’s Response:
“The government represents all parties and opposition parties in this country. In that sense, we are here.”
