A first-year female student of the Kuliyapitiya Technical College reportedly attempted to end her life by jumping into a nearby lake, unable to bear the ragging she faced.

Residents in the area rescued the student, and according to Kuliyapitiya Police, three male students and one female student have been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

The incident, in which the new female student of Kuliyapitiya Technical College jumped into the nearby lake, was reported yesterday (02) afternoon.

A bystander recorded the moment when residents acted quickly and rescued the student.

Afterwards, the student was admitted to Kuliyapitiya Hospital, and hospital sources said her condition is not serious.

Kuliyapitiya Police have recorded a statement from the student as part of their investigations into the incident. She has stated that she was subjected to unbearable ragging at the technical college.

She also told police that she faced forms of abuse she could not even describe.

We then inquired about this from the Principal of Kuliyapitiya Technical College, Mr. Chandana Abeylal.

He said that an internal investigation is also being carried out at the technical college regarding the incident.

Three senior male students and one female student of the technical college, who are alleged to have carried out the ragging against the new student, were taken into custody by Kuliyapitiya Police today.

Police said the suspects will be produced before the court tomorrow (04) under the Anti-Ragging Act.
