Following the local government elections held on May 6, the inaugural meeting of the newly elected Colombo Municipal Council has been scheduled for June 16, as announced in a gazette notification issued by Western Local Government Commissioner Sarangika Kalhari Jayasundara.

According to the notification, the meeting is set to commence at 9:30 a.m. at the City Hall.

The first item on the agenda will be the election of the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Colombo.

Although no single party secured an absolute majority in the recent local government elections, both the National People’s Power (NPP) and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) have declared their intention to form alliances with other political groups to secure the mayoral position.

Meanwhile, the gazette also states that inaugural meetings of 20 additional local government bodies across the Western Province are scheduled to be held throughout June.
