The Bar Association has taken steps to start a series of public seminars with the aim of making people aware of the pressures being put on the judiciary by the executive and the legislature, and to take action against it. Sri Lanka Latest News
Recently, President Ranil Wickramasinghe’s statement that he is not ready to accept any decisions made by the Parliament except for the decisions given by the Parliament in the restructuring of the local debt, and the speaker’s statement that ‘the optimization of the local debt was approved by the Parliament, so giving a court decision against it is a violation of the constitution’. The decision is also to be discussed here, and the President’s counsel Mr. Saliya Peiris had pointed out that this is an undue influence on the judiciary by the executive and the legislature.
Mr. Saliya Peiris had further pointed out that since the judges cannot comment publicly against such statements, the legal community representing the judiciary should defend the independence of the judiciary against it.
Accordingly, Mr. Saliya Peiris had pointed out that all the lawyers who have different opinions should come together and take the lead to protect the independence of the judiciary and start a new struggle for that.
The first public conference here will be held on Monday (September 04) at 1:00 p.m. The lawyers’ collective has decided to hold the meeting at Sri Lanka Foundation at 3:00 p.m.
The conference series is titled ‘Democracy, Executive and Judiciary’.
Speakers include President’s Counsel Jeffrey Alagaratnam, President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya, President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris, Professor Vasantha Seneviratne, Lawyer Upul Kumarapperuma, Lawyer Armisa Tigal.
The discussion will be moderated by Mr. Rienzi Arsakularatne, President’s counsel.
