Namal Dissanayake, Chief Engineer of Kandy Municipal Council’s Waste Management Unit, said that more than 250 tons of garbage was collected within the city limits during the ten days of the Kandy Esala Perahera. (Sri Lanka Latest News)
He said that the amount of garbage thrown away including the polythene discarded food items brought by the visitors to watch Perahar was about 25 tons per day.
He also explained that more than 15 tons of wastes, including logs and elephants dung, were collected every day at the places where nearly a hundred elephants were parked.
Almost five tons of waste such as plastic bottles, polythene toys, lunch boxes and more than five tons of discarded food were collected every day.
He also said that more than 250 tons of waste is currently being classified for recycling in Gohagoda and it is not easy to categorize such a lot of garbage.
