An Extraordinary Gazette Notification has been issued, introducing amendments to the powers of Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) and Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs).
The Gazette has been issued under the signature of National Police Commission Chairman Lalith Ekanayake.
According to the new provisions, DIGs are now authorized to take disciplinary action against Police Sergeants and ranks below, including Police Security Assistant Officers. With the approval of the Police Commission, DIGs are empowered to carry out transfers, suspensions, and disciplinary inquiries within their respective jurisdictions.
Furthermore, ASPs have also been granted authority to impose disciplinary punishments and suspend officers operating under their command within their areas of jurisdiction.
