Exorbitant fuel allowance for legislators! Citizen pay a high price!

According to parliamentary sources, all MPs’ fuel allowances have been suddenly increased by nearly two lakh rupees.

As a result, a member of parliament in a remote area like Jaffna will be credited with an additional amount of nearly two lakhs for fuel each month.

MPs from other provinces will also receive more than 100,000 rupees.

Until last June, the fuel stipend given to legislators was adjusted to the old fuel price. The payment of allowances based on increased fuel prices was previously halted by order of Mr. Basil Rajapaksa, former Minister of Finance, due to the economic crisis.

Given the current economic situation, a number of MPs asked that the stipend be paid in accordance with the new fuel prices. According to the sources, the fuel allowance has been increased as a result of the request.

Due to the fuel crisis, many members of parliament from far away only came to the parliament on rare occasions.
